18 months – 24 months

18 months – 24 months

  • Most toddlers are walking by 18 months, and some will begin to walk up and down stairs with help
  • Your child may engage in “parallel play” – playing alongside other children but not “with” them.
  • Your toddler’s physical skills are probably developing more now, they may become better at kicking, throwing, and building & scribbling
  • You may find your child beginning to become a little more picky about their eating – this is normal as they adjust to different textures and tastes.
  • Towards the 24 month mark, your child may begin to show readiness for toilet training – there will be cues for this that you can find on our factsheets (Hyperlink to page here)
  • Your toddler will be experiencing some new big feelings, for example; anger, frustration, sadness – but they won’t know how to regulate or express these – so they’ll need understanding and support from their grown ups.
  • Your toddler will probably begin experimenting with around 1 – 7 new words per week, and will learn lots of new words very quickly! By around 24 months, your toddler is likely able to use simple, 2 or more word sentences to describe their wants, needs, or what they see around them.
